Although information is seen by many organisations as an important asset that needs to be managed, controlled, and measured throughout its life cycle, companies rarely invest in IT governance projects. The information life cycle recognises that the value of information
changes over time and that information must be managed accordingly. According to Gartner (2016), the information life cycle “seeks to classify data according to its business value and establish policies to migrate and store data on the appropriate storage tier and, ultimately, remove it altogether.”
